THE DEVI) AM) TIIE I.iYIM; ll";ee and Kaiisom. Editor JuI'kn'ai.: The very excellent Memorial address by Capt. Hamilton C. Graham, which you have printed in your paper is a most valuable contribu tion to the literature of our State. It should be published in more enduring form and liud a permanent place in the. public and private libraries of the country. The name of Pettigrevv is one to be cherished in North Carolina: it illus trates the annals of a State. They who have borne it were exemplars of that character which ennobles a racj. their lives such as lend renown to a people; that give lustre to a civilization. Gen. Johnston Pcttigrew was a typical Carolinian. In reading him we realize what we lost by the war. Our loss was not of property or political prestige, but in men. Immeasurably greater than all the other ilia of the war was the de struction of lives. What would not North Carolina be today could she have aroused from the dead battle lields, at the close of the war, her sleeping sons I There were two young lives whoso liu s ran parallel Pettigrevv and Han som. At the State University they were able rivals in learning and accom plishments, the distinguished leaders of respective following in the school. They graduated with equal distinction, each the favorite of hia faction, and en tered upon th" work of their lives splendidly equipped for the achieve-I ment of high honors and great renotvu. j It will ii' t be deemed in v id ious to the ' living st.iiesiii.iii to suggest that the: dead soldier was. p.-rhaps. the liner1 scholar, (he I 1 Iti r s! 11 I rut . t he abler I man. Heard a good sermon at Queens creek last Sunday by Rev. P. J. Carra way. P. E., of this district. Text from Hebrew 9-4: "There is a rest that ip maineth for the poeple of God. " Mr. C. is a fine speaker and all who fail to go and hear him preach when they have the opportunity will miss a treat cer tainly. He is a brother of Maj. 1). T. Carraway, of your city. The weather has been so cold lately that but few snakes and alligators have been around this week. George E. Moore killed two coachwhip snakes that measured l's feet, but one was a young one. Mr. Russell heard his dog bark and howl near his house and went to see what was the matter and found a rattlesnake with a mouth ful of dog hair and the dog lying dead a few feet from the snake. Mr. R. killed the snake and buried his dog. The snake had six rattles. Jones County Items- We have a fine prospect of a good crop of Irish potatoes this years. Prosperity and happiness attend them. Mr. Sylvanus Barker has purchased the entire stock of goods of Mr. liobert Hay, at Trenton, and will continue the business at the same stand. As Mr. Barker is a man of considerable energy, if no bad luck intervenes, will certainly do a lively business. Mr. John W. Wooten informs me that he has been trying some labor-Paving plow and cultivators which he found at Mr. Geo. For a large portion of the time wa conliued to bed. and suffered the most excruciating pain, my legs badly swollen. Aiy case was thought incurable by the physi cians, and I have often hoped that death would ensuo and relieve me of pain. Last month I secured, at the suggestion of a friend, one dozen bottles of Swift's Specific, and after using about six bot tles I am entirely free from pain, the first time in nearly fourteen years. Ma joints are becoming more snpple and the swelling gone. I am ready to an swer any inquiries as to the facts in the case. O. W. St. Cl.Alit. Cabot, Ark.. April 19, S4.
